Druid Walk Silver Springs August 23rd 2015

We met at 10:00 in the parking lot near the ball diamonds and headed straight for the Chartres Labyrinth. You can read all about the volunteer effort in making the labyrinth here on the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs page.    The interlocking bricks surrounded with Creeping Thyme make a wonderfully  peaceful meditative walk.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk through the labyrinth, but you can easily spend much more time in the park.  We walked northward through the many gardens and even had the good fortune of meeting one of the volunteers who showed us some of the ripest  choke cherries in the Edible Fruit Gardens. There were also crab apple trees, raspberry canes and other little berries to taste.

We spent about 2 hours in the park, amazed more and more by each garden.  Possibly the most amazing thing was the Oak Tree Grove,  complete with apple trees and picnic tables in the center.  This is a perfect place for a Druid Picnic!

Flowers were blooming through out, and the many bees we saw seemed to be very appreciative of the blossoms.   There was a large section of sunflowers, a large rose garden and many flowers planted along the borders.  I cannot imagine how much work it is to keep such a lovely place looking so well tended.

Besides the thousands of trees, flowers, fruit and herbs, the gardens are home to many sculptures, urns, benches and pathways.  7000 trees were planted here in 2002 as part of the City of Calgary Birthplace Forest.     Since that time the local volunteers have continued to add to the park, making it a real amazing place to go for a walk.

Our next Druid Walk is September 27th at St. Patrick's Island to see the redeveloped park.  More details to follow, including where to park and meet.
